Braga is one of the oldest Christian cities in Europe, founded by the Romans in 16 BC as Bracara Augusta and the capital of the Gallaecia province. Its 12th-century cathedral — the oldest in Portugal — set the spiritual tone for a city that today brims with baroque churches, lively student bars and a beautifully preserved historic centre. The undisputed highlight is the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019, whose monumental zigzag staircase of 577 steps rises past fountains, chapels and allegorical sculptures representing the Five Senses and the Three Virtues. A 19th-century funicular still climbs the hillside using only water counterweights.

Twenty-five minutes south, Guimarães Portugal is celebrated as the birthplace of Portugal — the town where Afonso Henriques was born in 1111 and proclaimed the first king after the Battle of São Mamede in 1128. Its medieval centre, inscribed by UNESCO in 2001, is anchored by the 10th-century castle, the Romanesque chapel of São Miguel and the imposing Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, all linked by cobbled lanes lined with granite houses and wrought-iron balconies. The phrase "Aqui Nasceu Portugal" carved into the city walls says it all.

Food lovers will enjoy regional specialities such as bacalhau à Braga, rojões à minhota and Vinho Verde from the nearby Minho region. Peneda-Gerês National Park is Portugal's only national park, established in 1971 to protect the extraordinary biodiversity and granite landscapes of the country's far northwest. Spread across more than 700 square kilometres along the Spanish border, the park encompasses four mountain ranges — Peneda, Soajo, Amarela and Gerês — and shelters ancient oak and pine forests, dramatic ridgelines, glacial lagoons and dozens of waterfalls.

The park is a paradise for hiking in Portugal. Well-marked trails lead to the Cascata do Arado and Cascata da Fecha de Barjas waterfalls, to the turquoise Caniçada and Vilarinho das Furnas reservoirs (the latter built over a submerged village still visible when water levels drop), and along sections of the old Roman Geira road that once linked Braga to Astorga. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot roe deer, golden eagles and the iconic Garrano wild ponies that roam freely across the highlands; the park is also home to one of Iberia's last Iberian wolf populations.

Traditional granite villages such as Soajo, Lindoso and Pitões das Júnias preserve a living rural heritage centred on the espigueiros — raised stone granaries used to dry maize, some dating back to the 18th century. Local gastronomy is hearty and unpretentious: smoked Barrosã beef, cabbage broth, rye bread and the famous Vinho Verde of the Minho region.

Visiting Santiago de Compostela from Porto is a rare opportunity to cross into Spain and discover one of Europe's great spiritual capitals in a single day. Santiago, in the green Spanish region of Galicia, is the legendary endpoint of the Camino de Santiago — the medieval pilgrimage routes that have drawn travellers from across the continent since the 9th century. The city's old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.

At its heart rises the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago, a Romanesque masterpiece begun in 1075 and crowned by exuberant baroque towers added in the 18th century. According to tradition, the cathedral safeguards the remains of the Apostle James, discovered in the early 9th century by a hermit guided by mysterious lights — Compostela meaning "field of stars". The Pórtico da Gloria, the giant botafumeiro incense burner and the moment when arriving pilgrims kneel in the Praza do Obradoiro are unforgettable. Galician cuisine adds another layer of pleasure: pulpo a feira (octopus with paprika), empanada, Albariño wines and a slice of almond tarta de Santiago round off any visit.

On the way back to Porto, the day continues at Valença do Minho, a Portuguese border town separated from Spain only by the Minho River. Its astonishing 17th- and 18th-century star-shaped fortress — one of the finest examples of Vauban-style military architecture in the Iberian Peninsula — encloses an entire historic village of cobbled lanes, churches and lively shops famous for linen and Portuguese textiles.
